Aim

The aim of this piece of Applications work is for the student to develop a knowledge and understanding of the use of engineering materials, manufacture techniques and basic heat-treatment processes.

Learning Outcome

By the end of this piece of applications work, the student should have fulfilled module     Learning Outcomes 4 & 6.

Understand customer and user needs.

Understand contexts in which engineering knowledge can be applied.

Tasks

You will be split up into groups of 5 and each group will be allocated a group number.

 (Group I, II, III, etc)

Your tasks are as follows:

a)  Choose the item which your group is to manufacture and investigate its design in terms of its geometry, features and requirements. Things to be considered     and investigated for different types of punches (Pin Punch, Centre Punch, Nail  punch, DrifPunch)

     i) Their purpose

    ii) How they are used

iii) What properties would be required

iv) What possible material would they be made from

b)  Pick one of the items and make a simple design of the tool by producing a
computer model (using SolidWorks) and, from this, a Detail Drawing of the tool containing all the necessary dimensions and other detail for manufacture. (The piece  of material you will be making the tool out of is Ø12mm x 90mm long).

c)  Produce a Production Plan for the manufacture of the item including all the
processes that the item will go through prior to finishing and including machining and heat-treatment processes and operations.

d)  Perform the operations and produce the final item.

e)  Test the item. Does it do what it is supposed to do without failure?

f)  Write a brief report on the whole process and procedure and store it within your
Applications Project portfolio in Moodle. Reflect on the work that has been done.

g)  A hardcopy of Report should be submitted for the final assessment.
